UNROOTED
“Unrooted” is a bilingual book that takes an intimate perspective on belongingness and unrootedness as they are often intangible and hidden under conversations. It is presented through composing interviews and photography of individuals with various demographics that show their perception and experience of the term. The book also presents a distant and scientific view of belongingness as an introduction for the readers.
This book is inspired by my personal experience as an individual who lived in China and the US for a long time. With connections to both cultures, a feeling of “floating in the middle” emerged as I sometimes wondered between the two places, not belonging to either. I’m unrooted, feeling lost in my surroundings, yet I’m unchained, feeling free of being.
